No audience is more mobilised than pet owners, and no ranking leaves them indifferent. Votes in this category are among the most fiercely contested on the site, for a simple reason: nobody is defending a breed in the abstract. Everyone is defending one particular animal — the one asleep at home — with the breed standing in as its representative.

That creates a bias worth knowing before reading any result. Highly photogenic breeds enjoy an exposure online far beyond their real presence in households, while animals with no pedigree — by far the most numerous — are under-represented everywhere except, precisely, in votes that let them compete. That is why the alley cat appears in our feline ranking: without it, we would be measuring breeding rather than beauty.

One principle applies to every match in this category: we do not run traits associated with documented health problems, however popular they are online. Rewarding a silhouette obtained at the cost of breathing or joint disorders would do a disservice to the animals and to the people who adopt them. The rankings here feature established breeds and ordinary animals — the ones you actually meet.

Cats take up all the room for now, which reflects the state of the web more than our preferences. Dogs will follow, with an added difficulty we have not yet resolved: the breed groups are so numerous that a five-way ranking would be arbitrary and a ten-way one unreadable.

Birds, horses and the animals usually described as "new pets" will come after that, each with communities whose voting intensity owes nothing to cat owners. Every one of these rankings will face the same design question: how many contenders can share a board before the percentages stop meaning anything. Our answer so far is five, occasionally more when the field genuinely calls for it.

One last word on how to vote here. Your animal appears in no ranking, and that is normal. Pick the one it most resembles, or the one you would adopt if you were starting again. Both answers are legitimate, and they do not produce the same result at all. If a contender is genuinely missing from an existing ranking, tell us: adding one to a live match is better than opening a second match alongside it.
